JOSEF FRANK EXHIBITION

The Josef Frank exhibition at the Fashion and Textile museum was a perfect opportunity to explore fabrics and pattern that is heavily influenced by nature and botany- something that is heavily linked to my own project.

All of Frank's fabrics used bold pattern and colour, and it was lovely to see the hand painted designs hung next to the textiles themselves:

Seeing an illustration translated into a textile design was really interesting, and also gave me a lot to think about regarding composition of the drawings on a large space.

Above is an example of a wood block used to create one of his designs, and good research for me using wood blocks/ lino to print my own illustrations onto fabric.

Not just beautiful and lush images, Frank's designs really capture the feeling of a place.

Also great to see his work in context- see my ideal living room above!

The exhibition also featured Frank's paintings, which really reflect his past career as an architect.

One thing that really caught by eye was the fabric above- the black surrounding the images on the white background not only made the image stand out, but also created a classic, 1950's educational style illustration look- and is something that I have used in past illustrations:

This is something I could explore further when printing my fabric.
