INITIAL PAINTINGS AND DRAWINGS

Below are gouache experiments,- looking at form and shape and just getting some images down so I can start to develop what style I would like the illustrations to be. As well as drawing inspiration from the forest, I was also trying to hark back to my summer project life drawing.

I think these are too bright and gaudy for the costume and story I want to make, however the trees and plants have been good to use for the portfolio and promotional module. This style is something I would consider for a more children's book illustration direction.

I also had a quick practice with illustrator to create block images, again using the plants/animals/nude theme. Again they are not as atmospheric as I would like for my final illustrations, but I think I can develop my Illustrator skills further to create moodier image. Also the illustrations below would translate well as screen prints.

Below I experimented with dark ink/ graphite contrasted with a rainbow pencil. This is closer to what I want the illustrations to be like, that naive kind of style that has a lot of texture and contrast- I think this will set the tone for the story and make it look moody and slightly creepy. I want the illustrations to reflect the mysterious nature of spoken word stories and the darkness of the forest.

I also edited some of the bears I drew for Pitch and Plan. I think the negative space style (that I also did for the summer project) is effective and it emphasises the contrast between the light and dark, creating a dynamic image. I edited the blue watercolour bear with my olio to create the forest bear- this shows progression and a new way I can create illustrations .
